Lush Henna OMBRE HAIR TUTORIAL

Before/After Lush Henna Caca Marron
Disclaimer: I did not put any sort of filter on the images to emphasize the colours. The first picture was taken at night, while the second was taken during the day with natural lighting.

I recently dyed my hair in the ombre hairstyle and noticed that the colour was beginning to fade on the bottom. I wasn't super pleased with the way it was turning orange because it was not a very nice transition from my natural black hair and did not go well with my skin colour. I thought it would be a great idea to try out the Lush Henna in the colour Caca Brun to restore the darker tones to my hair. I realized that there were no tutorials on the web for the ombre hairstyle, so I thought I'd try it out and let people know the problems I encountered and offer some tips.

This is a really great product if you're looking for something that doesn't contain harsh chemicals. It's sold in blocks that contain henna power infused with coco butter, which provides amazing nourishment for your hair and leaves it soft and shiny! If you've used henna on your hands before like I have, you should have a good idea of the consistency of this product once it's melted and the smell. You should also be aware that it is not fully permanent and may fade after a little while depending on how often you wash your hair and your exposure to the sun. Also, the smell will linger in your hair for a couple of days, so if it's too strong for you, you may not want to try it.
I used the Caca Brun colour the first time and then a combination of that and the Caca Marron the second time. It worked much better the second time around, but that is most likely my fault and not that of the Caca Brun bar.

You'll want to read through the whole article before your start so that you don't make any mistakes along the way. I have included a printer-friendly PDF version of the instructions without pictures so that you can refer to that while you try this and avoid getting your computer dirty.
PDF Instructions

What you will need:

Picture
- Lush Henna brick (choose from colours Caca Rouge, Caca Marron, Caca Brun or Caca Noir; I used Caca Brun and Caca Marron)
- heat proof bowl
- kettle and pot of boiling water
- knife for cutting block of henna (you could use a grater, but I wouldn't recommend that)
- wooden spoon or spatula for mixing while bar melts
- pot for double boiling
- oven mitts (safety first)
- lot's of newspaper
- Lush Ultrabalm or vaseline
- hair clips (clamps)
- rubber gloves
- saran (plastic) wrap
- small and large hair elastics
- towel (dark preferably) and ugly shirt

What to do beforehand

1. Go to your nearest Lush store if you have one in your city and pick up the bar. It costs $25.95 CAD before tax, which comes out to approximately $30 CAD after tax. I would not recommend buying this online if you can avoid it because it costs the same, plus you would have to pay for shipping. Moreover, if you go in to the store, they will give you gloves and a sample of Ultrabalm to use. If they don't offer, just ask them and they'll be happy to provide you with some. Do this a few days before you want to fully dye your hair.
Picture
2. Wash you hair and do a test strand! This is very important  (especially if you have light hair). I've read reviews of people online who didn't realize how brown the Caca Brun bar would take their blond hair. You can do this before you go to bed. Use about 1/4 - 1/2 of a square and dissolve it in boiling water until it resembles yogurt in consistency. Coat a strand of your hair from the back of your head in the paste and then wrap it in saran wrap (to protect your pillows and such). If you have ombre hair, you only need to coat up to where the bottom colour meets the top colour. Use hair elastics to secure the saran wrap on the top and bottom of the hair strand. You may want to sleep on a towel. Wash out in the morning.

Disclaimer: Please be aware that I already had my hair dyed in the ombre style before darkening it with Lush Henna. I did not include instructions on how to bleach your hair in the ombre style and would highly recommend that you get that done at a salon. This technique is meant to darken fading ombre hair, or can be used generally to darken your full head of hair. However, if your hair is black or very dark brown, you'll rarely notice much of a change in colour. You would get the deep conditioning that the Lush Henna bar has to offer and some undertones of the colour, so it wouldn't be a complete waste!

Let's start!

3. Pick a night you can fully devote to doing this. Start before 10 pm if this is your first time because it might take a while. Lay down plenty of newspaper to protect your floors. I made a newspaper pathway from my washroom to my bedroom. Don't worry, you can recycle most of it afterward if you're careful not to made too much of a mess everywhere.
Picture

4. Cut up the henna block into squares and store away what you do not need. The block already comes with “perforations” for six squares. Cut along these lines. My hair reaches just above my elbow and I found a full block (6 squares) was the right amount for me. I do have a lot of hair though, so you may need less. I used 2 squares of a Caca Brun bar I already had and 4 Caca Marron squares from the new bar I bought. Store away whatever you do not use.

5. Set up a double boiler to melt the henna squares. Prepare a pot of boiling water (about 1 inch high with water) and set a heat proof bowl on top. Place the squares into the bowl and allow them to begin to melt. Add boiling water from a kettle to the mixture and stir with a spatula or wooden spoon. Continue to melt the mixture until it resembles a yogurt consistency.

TIP: add more water than less if you're unsure because the more you let it sit, the more the water will absorb in and it may become dry and difficult to apply. This melting process took me approximately 10-15 minutes. You will also want to use a hood fan if you can because the smell is quite strong and very earthy.

Alternatively: if using a double boiler scares you the way it scares me, you can also simply add boiling water to a heatproof bowl to melt the squares. Apparently the squares won't melt as evenly, but I didn't notice much of a difference.

6. Prepare your hair and face. Apply the sample of Ultrabalm or Vaseline to your hairline and on your ears to protect them from the dye. It's very important to make sure you brush your hair before starting. I suspect this is the reason it didn't work so well for me the first time around. Brushing helps the henna paste coat all of the individual strands rather than just those on the outside.

TIP: this is a good time to make sure you have everything you will need for the rest of the night near by. You don't want to be walking around too much because you might make a mess around your house. Maybe keep some snacks and magazines with you for later. Make sure you are wearing a shirt you don't mind getting stained!
Picture
A free sample from the Lush store. You can use vaseline as well.
Picture
Create a barrier on the skin where you feel it may get stained.
7. Section off your hair and apply the henna paste! I found it much easier to coat all of my hair when I sectioned off the top part and did the bottom half first. This may not be necessary for you if you have less hair or a friend to apply the henna for you. I kept a kettle handy in case the paste began to dry out as I was applying. Don't forget your gloves!
Picture
Picture
Add warm water if you feel the remaining paste is beginning to dry.
For ombre hair I tried 2 techniques:

Cleopatra: coat just a bit above where your hair fades from the natural colour to the new colour. Apply the henna in approximately 8 sections (4 on the left and 4 on the right side of your head). Cover the sections in saran wrap similarly to the way you would for a strand test and secure with elastic bands. Sleep on a towel or old shirt you don't mind soiling.

Pro: Does not hurt your neck as much as the bun method
Con: Did not work as well for me (but I suspect that is for other reasons) and only works for ombre hair
Picture
1. Coat hair up to where it changes colour. This WILL get messy and gross.
Picture
2. Take 2 inch strands and cover in plastic wrap. I had 4 on each side.
Picture
3. Secure on top with a larger hair elastic.
Picture
4. Secure bottom with a small elastic.
Bun: coat the bottom section of your hair in the paste before the top section. Wrap your hair into a sort of bun and cover the bun in saran wrap (I used 4 pieces of saran wrap). Wrap your hair including the bun in a towel. This helped my neck support the bun and made for a lot less of a mess than the Cleopatra method.

Pro: Worked better for me and much less time consuming than the Cleopatra method.
Con: Hurts your neck more.

Picture
Picture
<-- Sorry about the poor image quality on some of the photos. I didn't want to ruin my camera while I was applying the henna, so I used my phone.
If you do not have ombre hair, coat your full head of hair with the henna paste. You'll probably want it to be more watery at the start because it will take longer and you don't want it to dry out. Keep a kettle handy to add more boiling water if the paste dries out slightly. Wrap your full head of hair in saran wrap the way you would wrap your hair after a shower. You may want to use multiples pieces of saran wrap to secure the hair because it gets quite heavy. Wrapping your hair in a towel afterward may help reduce the mess.

TIP: spend a good amount of time working the henna into your hair. The first time, I suspect it worked less well for me because I didn't do this. Make sure the henna coats nearly every strand. Don't worry if it's not perfect though because it looks nice afterward when you end up with multi-toned hair!

8. Let the paste sit in your hair. You will want to leave this in for at least 5-6 hours in my opinion. If you would prefer that it fades sooner, you could always leave it in for less time. However, I would highly recommend that you leave this in over night. The heat from your body while you sleep will improve the depth of the colour vastly. Make sure you wash your feet before wandering around. My feet had lots of ink on them from the newspaper I was walking on. Sleep on a towel to protect your sheets!

TIP: treat this as a spa night. Since you will need to wait for a long period of time and you cannot really leave the area, this is a great time to do a facemask, your nails, or just watch a movie. This would be very fun to do with a friend for company and so you can laugh at how funny you both look with your Cleopatra saran wrapped hair.

The next morning

9. Wash out the henna paste and clean up. Let this be the first thing you do in the morning to save yourself some clean up time. This will make your shower very dirty. Continue to wash the paste out until the water runs clear. Your hair may smell of henna for the next couple of days. This is a good time to vacuum/mop/clean your tub because you don't want to leave any stains anywhere.  Make sure you recycle the newspaper you did not get dirty with henna or save it for next time!

Overall Comments

I was very happy with this product and would definitely recommend it if you don't mind dealing with the mess and can handle a somewhat strong smell. I found this to be great for darkening my fading ombre hair. I didn't have to worry about being a little sloppy about the job I did because my natural hair is black, so it didn't affect the colour other than in places I wanted it to. It looked great with the messy job I did because strands of hair remained lighter and some got darker, so I ended up with a really nice multi-toned effect.

5/5 stars for sure.

Your hair is so gorgeous, and you've definitely convinced me to give henna a try. I've had not great experiences with chemical dye and whilt I like my hair colour, I wish it had more depth and tone so gonna give caca marron a try. Just not looking forward to the potential mess!! Thanks for the tips :)

Is there anyway you can get ghe ombré look if hair has never been dyed before, only using henna, even multiple Colours/shades?

Thanks for your question!
If you are going from lighter to darker you can get the ombre look without having dyed your hair before. I found a blog post that demonstrates this: http://www.bowsandcurtseys.com/2012/08/diy-ombre-for-light-hair.html. (you can substitute the drugstore hair dye for henna).
If you are going from darker to lighter hair like I did, you will need to bleach your hair unfortunately. I would recommend that you let a professional do hat part for you because it could turn out badly otherwise (although it's a little pricey). Then you can add whatever lush henna colour you'd like. To achieve different colours, you can either purchase different lush bars in different colours (Red, Marron, Brun, or Noir) or you can buy one and use plastic wrap to wrap some strands. Those strands will turn out more red than the ones left to dry in the air.
I hope this helps! Please be sure to let me know if anything was unclear. :)

Question: I live in Pakistan, i have never dyed my hair and I really do not want to try out the damaging hair dyes. Whenever I think of getting a natural brown and ash color, I think that I should go for the permanent hair dye. But then I think I should go for a henna instead. And after seeing the LUSH products, I really now want to try it out. But where can I buy it in dubai? (I am basically from UAE. And I can buy it from there if I can).
My hair is dark brown. You can call it black but it does have a shade of dark brown. So it ain't jet black. My hair is in the middle of being straight and wavy. It is amazingly silky and soft in natural. But yeah I haven't taken care of it since I've been growing through teenage. But now I'm starting to. And still it is like the most perfect hair everyone sees.
Sorry for all that stupid talk... just tell me where can I get it in dubai or abu dhabi. And what color would suit me? I basically love dark ash blonde and Browns. So I need something in the middle of that.
Thanks! :)

Hi Hadia! I think you're already off to a great start that you do not want to try out damaging hair dyes. If you are trying out a new colour, Henna is definitely a good option to go for because it's not completely permanent, so if you don't like the colour, it should fade a bit after a little while.
LUSH products are really great, but unfortunately I don't think they ship outside of North America. If you really wanted to use Henna by that brand, you could try a 3rd party shipping company to get the products to Pakistan. If you are okay with using a non-lush henna, I'm sure you will be able to find it in stores that sell natural hair products.
I think for you a brown would be safer to try if it is your first time dying your hair. You should be aware that for Lush henna it only really works if you are going from lighter to darker hair, so you may need to go to a salon and get your hair lightened first. However, I heard that if you try the henna on very dark brown hair, your hair will feel silkier and you will notice a slight undertone of the colour you choose, but the colour will not be very noticeable. Please feel free to let me know if you have any more questions or if something I said was unclear!

Oh my goodness! I thought I was the only who did this with their previously oombre hair! It looks amazing! I love this product so much. It has helped with the damage the bleach did to my poor hair :(

This is an absolutely top-notch post! Thank you for taking the time to post!

Thank you for your kind comments! Yes I feel the same way! I couldn't really find anyone out there who also used henna on previously ombré hair. It has been a little while since I last used the Caca Brun/Marron and I think I may try Caca Noir next to get the bleached parts closer to my original hair colour soon!

Cheers,

Anika :)

This actually is starting to convince me to buy it! Haven't seen as good a transition picture or explanation of the Lush Henna anywhere else so well done and thank you! Just wanted to ask, I didn't realise it wasn't permanent...guess I should have, but how is it now? has it faded any? I've got the exact same problem, my ombre is starting to ginger out now and I really dont want that especially for winter time... was just wondering how this is or was holding up? Did it last long? Is it still lasting from July??

Your answer will probably make or break me getting one haha I've got a permanent hair dye already bought but just wondering if I should go for a less harsh alternative right now that'll do the same job.

Hi Maggie,

Thanks for your comment and sorry about the slow response. I was just waiting to get exams out of the way.

So after waiting a while, I found that it did fade between July and now. For me personally, I found that it was time to reapply it in about 2-3 months afterward. I think it would have lasted longer if I purchased a brush to comb through the paste while it was in my hair so that it would coat more individual strands and less would be wasted.
I would still recommend that you try the henna at least once because it's a lot safer to use if you're willing to invest a little. Also I find the colour to be much more natural looking than the chemical dyes.

I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any other questions!

Hey Lilian!
If you already have ombre in your hair and considering you hair is short, I think the bun method would most likely work best for you. The Cleopatra method might be difficult to achieve depending on how short your hair is. I hope this answers your question! Let me know if you are still unsure about anything! :)

I've got another question. Because I've got flat hair I'm not really sure if it would fit me and I've never done an ombré before. Will it work anyway?

Hello! I'm so glad I have found your post. I know this is kind if a confusing question, but here goes! So I've bleached my hair to have it ombre'd. My hair is originally a dark brown and I got my ends to a very light blonde, almost white. After awhile I decided I was sick of the blond and wanted to go back to my natural hair. So I got it professionally died and now it has faded to a medium very ash brown. If I decided to dye it with caca noir, will my hair turn green? Shoukd i try the caca marron first, will that darken the ashy omvre parts? :( I really want my hair to be dark again. Thanks!

Hello Kim! Thanks for your comment! I hope I'm not responding toilet and that you see this first! Of course everything is up to you and this is just my opinion. I this you would be best off trying the Caca Brun before delving into the Caca Noir because it might make a much smoother transition. I have used the Caca Brun myself and have been very satisfied with the results. The colour was very rich and warm so that would be a good solution to your ash-y hair colour problem. I have the same concern as you do about the Caca noir that you might get an unfavourable colour result. I have read many other reviews of this product saying that the noir is really strong so it might be a bad option to use from a lighter tone of hair. I have also heard of people's hair turning somewhat greenish from the Caca noir but they said the green fades in 2-3 days I believe. If you want to be ultra careful about the colour, you could consider going into a Lush store and having them dye your hair with the henna for you so that you get a very full coverage in areas that may be harder to reach.
I really hope this helps! :)

I have ombre hair it fades into and medium blond if I were to color my hold head would there be a drastic change? My hair is black at the top.

Hi Allison,

Thanks for your question! Whether or not there will be a drastic change mainly depends on which colour of henna you choose to use. For example, if you use the Noir or the Brun, the change will most likely be more drastic. However, considering your hair is a medium blond, you should notice a significant difference with any of the henna bars.

I think it would be a good idea for you to dye your whole head because it wouldn't really change the colour of your roots since they're black and it would help the colour blend more naturally. Plus the texture benefits would reach you whole head of hair.

I hope this helps and please let me know if I missed out on something!

Hi Anika!

I have brown hair to my shoulders and I have never dyed my hair before or done ombre, but I would like to dye the ends of my hair with Caca Rouge. Could I please have your opinion? I know that's not the henna dye you used but I would really love your opinion since this post was really well done. Thanks :)

Hi Jay,

Thanks so much for your question! I feel as though my answer will vary depending on what shade of brown your hair is. The thing is that the darker your hair, the less the colour will show. If you have darker brown hair, and use the Caca Rouge, I would expect that you would get a really nice undertone of red in your hair that would show best when you're in the sun. I think this would look quite nice and would make your hair colour very rich, but the colour change won't be shockingly obvious. If you have lighter brown hair, the colour might be quite striking and the red should really shine through. If you do choose the lighten the tips of your hair before dying them red, I would recommend that you get that step done professionally because I've seen it look really unnatural on people when they bleached their hair themselves. Another tip: when you do add the henna (since you're just doing the tips), try to blend it as well as you can with your natural hair to be sure that you don't get a harsh looking line where the colour starts.

I guess at the end of the day, since this is a natural product, it works a bit uniquely on each person, so you'll have to be a bit ambitious.

Good luck and have fun with your Lush henna adventure :)

Hi, great informative tutorial! I was just wondering how long i should leave it in. My natural hair colour is a brownish auburn and i was aiming for a brown chestnutty colour. I'll use caca marron and i was wondering how long to leave it in for and whether, if i want a less red result, leaving my hair without wrapping it would help?

Hi Amy! I hope I'm responding before you had a chance to use the Caca marron. I would suggest that you leave it in all night regardless of whether you want a more reddish tone or now because it will last longer. If you don't do it at night, I would suggest a minimum of 4 hours. If you want a less red result you should do as you suggested and not wrap it with plastic wrap, but you should still sleep on a towel to protect your sheets.

I hope this helped and good luck!

Hi Lea,

That's a good question. Mine is naturally like that as well. If you use the Lush henna dye, you should still get the health benefits to your hair because the butter is highly nourishing. As far as colour goes, it's likely that it will barely be noticeable, but you may get a a very subtle and nice tint that will mainly be visible in the sun.

I hope that answers your question and please be sure to ask if you have any more questions!

Hi Ana,

Thanks for your comment! You will have to re-dye it in 6-8 weeks most likely. The dye will have different strengths for each person, so you'll have to test it out to know for sure. It will also depend on how often you wash your hair. However, I can say that if you let it sit for longer in your hair, the effects will last longer (ex. overnight > a few hours).

Hope that helps!

Hi Sam,

If you've got very dark hair, using the lush red will only give your hair a reddish tint when its exposed to sunlight. You're going to need to lighten your hair a little before applying the henna to colour it red with the Rouge. Be careful not to let the bleach sit for too long because that way you might end up with orangish hair like I had before I used the Caca Marron.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi,
Just being googling about Lush Henna dye as im not sure which to try out for the first attempt haha. Did you use two henna's for this? a dark and a lighter one? (Caca brun and Marron maybe? im not sure which is the lighter/darker of them two) Thank you xx

Hello Rachel,

Yes I did combine two for this one, but that was simply because I happened to have both colours. I've used them both individually before though. I'm not sure what your hair colour is and how dark you want to go. What I can tell you is that the Caca brun is darker than the marron, but they're both pretty dark. It's more a difference in colour between the two than darkness.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hey!
Thanks for your reply. My hair is a a mix of light/dark brunette. So I'm thinking of doing a ombre of Caca Brun then Marron at the ends If that'll work ok. I'd like a chestnut/ slight red tint

Anika
4/5/2016 09:00:12 am

Okay it really depends on how light your hair is for this to work if you want to go for the ombre. You may need to lighted the ends to get them light enough to have a blended colour and I would recommend you get that done at a salon unless you have a proper blending comb (to avoid getting a rigid line between the colours). You've picked the right bars for the tint you want though.
You might want to try doing a few test strands on both your lighter and darker strands to see if it's necessary for you to lighten your hair first.

Hi I have jet black hair and I was wondering if the color would come out darker if I dyed the same spot multiple times? I've always wanted to dye my hair, with ombre, bayalage or highlights ( i havent decided on the style i want ), but I don't want to damage my hair using chemicals.

Hi Tracey,

Because your hair is already jet black, at most the dye will just give you a nice coloured tint when you're in natural light. To actually see significant results like you would like wit ombré or balayage for example, you would first need to lighten you hear somehow. Most commonly you'd use bleach or peroxide, but you said you did not want to use chemicals. A natural way to lighten your hair is to use lemon juice and then let it sit in the sun. However, this may be damaging, so if you were going to try it, I'd suggest you try it on a small inconspicuous strand first to see how it is.

Hi! Love your hair! And your tutorial. I found it very helpfull...
Also,
I wanted to asked you, did you use Caca Marron or the Caca brun? How many times did you apply the henna over the time?
I also have ombre and is turning the same orange color yours had and my natural hair color is a very dark brown so Im considering using henna.

Hi Gisellys,

I love your name and sorry about the slow response! I'm glad you liked the tutorial! Over time I've used it probably 4-5 times. I actually used both Caca Marron and Caca brun. If you mix them, you can get a shade between the ones offered and that's what I wanted.

I would highly recommend using the henna. My hair was in such bad condition after the ombré and after using the henna several times and not using any more chemical treatments in my hair like bleaching, it's so much healthier.

I hope this answers your question! Please do let me know if you have any others :)

Hi, thanks for the instructions. I have colored hair, mostly natural dyes, but still had PPD in it. Last color I used was semi henna with oils and flowers which only lasted 7-10 days. I want to use Lush henna, but not sure what's the right color for me. I did think about caca brun, but I hope it will not be too dark. The colors I have used previously have been chestnut or brown. What do you recommend.

Heya!

I'm so glad I stumbled across this because I have the exact same problem - my ombre is turning orangey/copper-ish, and it looks so unflattering against my natural black/dark hair and brown skin!

I read that if I leave the henna to air-dry (instead of wrapping it), the colour should go darker rather than redder, so maybe I'll try that.

I'm planning on buying some lush henna blocks, but I'm uncertain as to the colour. I'd like to get it as natural looking as possible (but still keep the ombre effect, just wayy darker), most importantly, I want to get rid of these orange strands (result of bleaching my hair). :/

So, I was wondering, which colour would you recommend? Have you tried the Caca Noir yet? & would you recommend Caca Noir or Caca Brun, or maybe even equal parts of both?

Hi this looks really cool and I have been interested in doing this for a while and I’m so glad I found your post about this. I’ve naturally dark brown hair & I am wondering about doing this. I will be using light mountain burgundy do you think Results would be about the same as yours? Is there anything you think I should add to my henna?

Hello! I loved your post, very informative. My very first experience with coloring my hair was with henna. I am now a hairdresser of 23 years, and have a blonde client friend who wants henna. I have an idea of creating a red balayage over her natural strawberry blonde... I'll be using your tips and tricks, wish me luck, and thank you for the great tutorial! I'll keep you posted with the results.
